DANE HAYLETT-PETTY – I’m fully backing his ability!
With the super15 rugby competition rushing toward us - finally! – And the 2015 Rugby World Cup looming on the horizon, it gives players the opportunity to put their hand up leading to Rugby’s biggest spectacle.
Is it out of the question that the Western Force’s own Dane Haylett-Petty will be there in England wearing Wallaby gold?
Internationally designed and locally produced, Dane, has represented Australian rugby at school boy, u20s, has equaled the record for most tries scored in a game at the JWC and represented Australia at rugby 7s.
Signed to the Force while still a teenager from 2008 - 2010, he then explored European and Japanese rugby until 2013, growing and maturing playing multiple positions including Wing, Centre and Fullback.
He has taken the role of Fullback at the Western Force for the 2015 season as his own, after reacquainting himself with Super Rugby in 2014.
Known for a strong attack and huge boot, at 6’3”and 100kgs, Dane is large and powerful with line breaking ability going forward and attack stopping strength in defense.
He has the aerial game that has become increasingly important, displayed with a great take and subsequent try scored in the NRC grand final.
With experience and exposure comes the timing and composure to make good decisions under pressure, as was evident with a deft touch to save a certain try in the same game.
Extremely good positionally when patrolling the deep, defensively, safe hands when gathering the long kick, giving himself plenty of time to plot a route deep into opposition territory at full pace, and the ability to link with support runners thus keeping the ball alive in attack and actively possessing the necessary skills for kicking long to relieve any pressure at the back.
Outside of Dane, are there any other players who are looking the goods at Fullback to take on Folau directly, and with the effects of a long season, media over hype, northern hemisphere conditions and opposition exploiting the gained knowledge of Folau’s extent of play? Not that I’ve seen play in last 12 months.
Dane Haylett-Petty offers several high level seasons of continuous and consistent improvement in the Fullback position within Union, while being extremely good value for anyone counting the dollars, and enough time spent in northern hemisphere conditions, to gain a degree.
There question begs asking again, is it out of the question that the Western Force’s own Dane Haylett-Petty will be there in England wearing Wallaby gold?
