Force back rower Angus Cottrell today returned to the training track after a horrific ankle injury that ended his 2014 season.
The powerful flanker will look to be part of a dynamic Western Force back row for the up and coming season, after the signing of Steve Mafi from the Leicester Tigers and Chris Alcock returning from a shoulder injury.
“My aim is getting into the starting 15, or the 23, wherever they see me, and just helping out the team as much as I can,” said Cottrell.
“The medical staff give you quite a rigorous regime, and you do a lot of off feet work, so you’re on the bike, or the grinder or the ergo, or swimming in the pool, so there were other things I could do which didn’t involve running. “
“The back row has definitely got some strong competition with big Steve Mafi coming in, and he’s a big guy.
“Chris Alcock also came back from a shoulder reconstruction, and then there’s Ross (Haylett-Petty), he’s another monster for a young kid.”
Cottrell looked to be running back at full speed during the training session, looking better than ever.
When asked about developing his game for the 2015 season, Cottrell said he and the training staff have been taking the appropriate steps to make him a stronger competitor.
“I identified the things I did well this year and sat down with the coaches towards the end of the season they identified a few areas of my game I could work on, so ill do my best to scratch up on those areas,” he said.
“Mainly in contact, in attack trying to break the line and hold my feet as much as I can, strength stuff.”
Cottrell will hopefully be back in action on the 23rd of January for the home pre season match against the Brumbies, as he did not get the chance to play in the NRC due to the extent of his injury.
The Force will play two pre season matches, both being in Perth. Ticketing details for both matches will be released next month.
